And then I saw it: A friend's stalkbook status. A status that brought to my attention that there was a concert happening at this shindig. And not just any concert. A free concert. And the performers?? Huey Lewis & the News. I am pretty sure I stopped breathing when I saw this. After recovering, I had to check the websites and newspapers again to ensure that it was in fact, correct information. She was not lying.
Basically more excited than I've ever been, we headed to this festival in Mason where there were beyond thousands of people walking around and eating food and huddled around a gigantic stage. I mean THOUSANDS. Back in the day I would have weaseled my way close to the stage and not really cared about much else, but I was a bit timid this day and as claustrophobic as ever. Thank goodness Ashley wasn't.
She dragged me up to the stage area to a guard who was protecting a private area of maybe 20 seats directly in front of the stage and whispered something to him and he let us through to those 20 seats. I was terrified to hear what she was told him, but apparently it was a reserved section for US military veterans (that was not advertised or anything which I guess would have filled it up quickly). She explained to him that I was an Air Force veteran (I really am) and he let us in for the show of our lives.
After the loads of concerts I have been to, and paid for, I think this is undoubtedly my favorite experience ever. And I am SO glad I got to spend it with one of the friends who means to most to me.
What is the best concert you have ever been to and why??

I really had no idea you were in the Air Force. Tell us about it!
ReplyDeleteGarbage is my favorite band ever and the first concert of theirs I went to was amazing! I think it was in '98, so I was still in high school. That band is fabulous, has gotten me through some tough times, and is putting out a new album and tours for the first time in like 7 years. I'll never forget my first concert seeing them though. There are have been others that almost compare, but nothing quite like....
ReplyDeleteThat is so incredibly awesome on so many levels!!
ReplyDeleteSo cool that you ended up getting to see them for FREE. Serendipity at its finest :)
ReplyDeleteThe best concert I've been to was Coldplay this past November - they were incredible!

Oh wow!! This takes me back! The Power of Love used to my favorite!! I really loved the show I went to when it was just Dave Matthews on stage with Tim Reynolds playing acoustic. It was amazing!
ReplyDeleteJayme @ Her Late Night Cravings
Bon Jovi. 'Cause I love him ;) So fun, can't wait for summer concert season!
ReplyDeleteHahaha I've seen them three times! HILARIOUS! It's always a fun show to have a few drinks at and dance around silly. Huey Lewis has some cougariffic fans!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds awesome!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite: Dave Matthews Band, march 2009 in Antwep, Belgium. Ahhhhhhhh, loved it! Loved Belgium and loved the concert- sooo good. I had missed them on the few occasions they had previously been to Europe and it was so worth it to travel to see them! And add some Belgian chocolate and Belgian beer and you have perfection!

ReplyDeletehi there! i have been to a good number of concerts in my day, ranging from U2 to NSync to the Up In Smoke tour {Snoop/Eminem/DrDre/Ice Cube}. AND I am excited to say that I am going to see Dispatch IN Amsterdam at the end of March...'m hoping that will be my favorite concert yet! It's their first concert outside of the states, so it should be good.
ReplyDeleteNothing like a free concert!
ReplyDeleteMy absolute fave... Paul Simon's concert in Central Park in like 1992 (I can't believe I'm that old!!). It was free, crowded, and AMAZING!! The only thing missing was Garfunkle :)
Huey and the boys sounds like fun! Sometimes the best things are unplanned. My favorite concert was in Ireland a few years ago, watching John Prine and Kris Kristofferson from backstage, and having dinner with them and their families later that night. Great music, great company, and a lifetime memory thanks to the wonderful John Prine.
ReplyDeleteJohn Mayer- hands down.
ReplyDeleteWatching that boy play guitar live is like NOTHING you hear on a cd or the radio. HE ROCKS.
